See what's happening in our class this week

Here is a new song we have been learning. Ask your child to show you the actions.

Here is our new word wall we made it as a class.

We created different types of maps; outer space maps, community maps, and princess maps.

We talked about what animals we wanted to learn more about. Click the picture to enlarge and see what we said.

Jasmine wants to learn more about caterpillars.

Mekai wanted to learn how bunnies get carrots.

Our Class Tree

We had a great week making our own tree. The idea started when we found a large box and children decided to make it into a tree. We painted it, created leaves, made birds and animals and made a hole for animals to go into. We then went outside to find natural materials such as sticks and branches to put on our tree. We decrorated our tree with all our artwork and natural materials. We had a great time throwing leaves around and pretending that the leaves were falling from the tree. Next week we are going to do some research on animals that we might find in our tree.

Literacy Activities in Kindergarten

Below you will see pictures of fun activities you can do at home to build literacy skills.

Chalboards and chalk
You can get some side walk chalk and have fun writing outside.

Magnetic Letters
Have your child use magentic letters to write their name and the names of family members.

Read together
After reading together in a book write about your favourite part, something the book reminds you of, change the ending or draw the characters from the story.

Write together
Here we were writing about what vegetables we want to put into our soup. At home write about experinces such as cooking together, going to the park, etc. Have your child draw pictures and help them to sound out words or write for them.

Use shaving cream on a tray and practice to write letters in the cream with your fingers.

Put rice into a container and have your child practice writing letters.

In the dramatic play area, children use their imaginations to create puppet shows. They are building their oral language skills. You can create a puppet theater at home. Ask your child to use recylced items to make one.

Put sand in a container and use your finger to make letters. You could also use a straw to write with.

If you have any suggestions please post a comment below.
Have fun trying some of these activities!

Inquiry in Kindergarten

Children are naturally curious about the world, they ask questions, discover, observe, problem solve to find answers. Inquiry learning is driven on the children's questions, their ideas and wonders of the world. This week in my Kindergarten class we started a great inquiry around pumpkins. Children wondered what was inside, some said seeds, some said milk. We took it apart to see what we would find. The children were amazed to discover many seeds inside. The children began to inquiry how the seeds got there? Why there were so many? Why it felt so "smushy". We began to research their ideas. One boy thought it would be a great idea for each child to take home a seed and grow at home. We packed a seed for each child and wrote a note together to parents explaining our project. We then began to grow our own seeds in the classroom. We asked children what things plants would need to grow. They decided that we would plant the seeds into many different materials to see what would grow best. We went out into the natural environment to look for these materials. They planted the seeds into; rocks, sand, soil, and wood chips. This inquiry came from the children's interests, when you build on their ideas and questions you create a program which is more meaningful to children. Spend some time really listening to children's questions, what do they wonder about the world? What can we research and investigate together?
